Released in most markets under the simplified title Sylvia Gray, this four-reel Vitagraph effort was one of several starring vehicles for stage and screen favorite Helen Gardner, best known today for her bravura performance in the 1912 version of Cleopatra. Tired of living on the fringes of poverty as the wife of an unsuccessful playwright, she leaves him for another man, taking the kids along for the ride. Upon learning this, her husband goes insane and wanders off for parts unknown, but not before sealing up his life savings -- 5,000 dollars, to be exact -- in the walls of his apartment. Several years later, the playwright's daughter grows up to be popular artist's model Sylvia Gray (Gardner). Sure enough, Sylvia and her bohemian friends take up residence in the selfsame apartment where her father's five grand has been squirreled away -- and the rest is as inevitable as it is predictable.
