This family drama revolves around the story of two teenage girls, Bay Kennish, who lives with her middle-class mother and father in Mission Hills, Kansas, and Daphne Vasquez, a deaf high school basketball player who lives with her struggling mother in Riverside, Missouri. When Bay discovers that her blood type doesn't match her family's she undergoes genetic testing and soon discovers that she and Daphne were switched at birth by the hospital where their mothers gave birth, leading to an unexpected connection, and a barrage of important questions about the true meaning of family.
