Apparently only "Here I Am" and "Why Was I Born?" were retained from Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein II's 1929 Broadway musical, Warner Bros. instead having commissioned a brand new score that included "Don't Ever Leave Me" and "Out of the Blue." Unfortunately, the studio kept most of Hammerstein's libretto, which was not one of his best, and although sweetly nostalgic in places, Sweet Adeline is also somewhat leaden. Irene Dunne could be the brightest of comediennes when given the right material, but here as the all-important star, she comes across as slightly dull. The most amusing performance, in fact, is offered by Hugh Herbert, who, when handed the old bromide that "the show must go on," responds with the obvious answer of "why?"
