As signed on April 10, 1998, the 'Belfast Agreement' embodied a significant step forward in the peace process between Ireland and Northern Ireland; among many other provisions, it dictated that the people of Northern Ireland would delineate the country's constitutional and governmental future, decommissioned all weapons of a paramilitary nature, and indicated the agreement of all parties to use nonviolent means in future political activities. Shot and released exactly a decade later, Joan Lopez's 2008 documentary Sunday at Five explores the many complexities of the "peace process" in ten-year hindsight, as experienced both inside and outside of prison. In so doing, Lopez filters her narrative through the eyes of two ex-convicts: onetime Loyalist Billy McQuiston and former Republican Seanna Walsh; throughout, the director cross-cuts between key archival footage and interviews with such subjects as prison wardens, relatives, and mediators.
