Synopsis by Mark Deming

Love and tragedy brings together two women ill-served by fate in this drama from writer and director Nagesh Kukunoor. Zeenat (Gul Kirit Panag) and Meera (Ayesha Takia) are two very different young women -- Zeenat is a independent-thinking Muslim who lives on her own and follows her own path in life, while Meera is a Hindu who is deeply devoted to her family and lives in the traditional manner. However, they do have some things in common; both are in love, both have recently married, and their husbands know one another. Zeenat has wed Aamir (Rushad Rana) and helps look after the home they share, while Meera has taken the hand of Shankar (Anirudh Jathkar) and lives with him at the home of his father. Eager to find better paying jobs, Aamir and Shankar travel to Saudi Arabia, but in time Zeenat and Meera receive shocking news -- Shankar is dead after he fell out of a window during a violent quarrel with Aamir, and Aamir will be executed for murder unless Meera is willing to sign a pardon agreement. However, Meera is no longer in a position to travel to travel to Saudi Arabia; her debt-ridden father in law has taken her jewels and her dowry, and may force her to become the lover of a wealthy man who is willing to pay for the privilege. Determined to find out the truth about what happened, Zeenat sets out to find Shankar's family; with little to go on, she turns to a street hustler named Beeroopiya (Shreyas Talpade) for help, though he proves to be less than reliable. Dor (aka String) was screened in competition at the 2006 Dubai Film Festival.
