Review by Bruce Eder

This was a movie that used to confuse a lot of kids when it showed up on television in the early/middle 1960's -- if one tuned in midway through, you saw the Three Stooges at work on screen, usually on a channel where their own short films weren't shown, but then suddenly there were these bits with Paul Winchell and his coterie of characters. It soon became clear to the youngest of us that someone that edited the Stooges material together, and it sort of worked. But it's a sign of just how funny the Stooges' best moments were that their scenes come off so much better than those of Winchell and company, though the ventriloquist/actor throws himself into the picture with sufficient fervor to take a pie in the face at the end, all in the name of continuity. The main flaw in the way the Stooges clips are utilized is that the producers felt compelled to add music behind their action -- the underscoring of their work adds little and feels so awkward that it distracts us from the comedy on the screen. Apart from those who are also fans of Winchell and his work, or simply drawn out of curiosity, Stooges admirers can safely skip Stop! Look! And Laugh! without feeling they've missed something.
