While investigating reports of attacks on Federation outposts by an invisible starship, Captain Kirk and the crew of the Enterprise come face to face, for the very first time, with the hostile Romulans in this installment of the well-known science fiction series. The Enterprise comes into conflict with a Romulan Bird of Prey, an enemy warship equipped with a cloaking device that allows the ship to remain invisible when it is not actually on the attack. During the battle, Kirk receives a communication from the usually secretive Romulans, who -- to the crew's great shock -- strongly resemble Vulcans. As a result, Kirk is forced to contain the growing distrust of Mr. Spock amongst some virulently anti-Romulan crew members, while desperately trying to overcome the seemingly insurmountable advantage created by the Romulan cloaking device.
