It didn't take much for the average 1917 filmgoer to figure out on the basis of its title alone that Souls Adrift had something to do with desert island castaways. Sure enough, the film is barely two reels old when wealthy steamship passenger Elma Raybourne (Ethel Clayton) and impoverished second engineer Micah Steele (Milton Sills) are shipwrecked and washed up on the shores of an unchartered desert isle. An honorable man, Micah refuses to "exert his advantage" over Elma, thereby sparing the audience that oldest of desert island movie cliches, the illegitimate baby. There was, however, the obligatory scene in which the prim heroine was shown taking a swim in the Altogether (though her nudity was merely implied). Likewise, the long-awaited "Now I see it all" scene, wherein the haughty Elma, who'd previously rejected Micah, finally learns to love him, takes place about a reel or so before the climax.
