Synopsis by Clarke Fountain

Set in Toronto's Chinatown against the background of events taking place in Beijing's Tienanmen Square in 1989, this drama shows how recent arrivals and native-born Chinese residents cope with Canadian culture and the country they left behind, and make whatever they can of their lives. In the story, Sally has just arrived, but is putting her all into adapting. Her roommate Zhao is haunted by what she has just left, and seems more attached to her Chinese-ness. Zhao has an affair with a fellow immigrant, a dissident professor, and is forced to reassess her life when she discovers that the professor has a wife and child in China. Lily on the other hand, has fallen for a white Canadian man, and is devastated when he has to leave her to work overseas.
