Stage star Bertha Kalich was provided with an excellent screen showcase in the form of the 1916 Fox release Slander. The wife of attorney John Blair (T. Jerome Lawler), heroine Helene (Kalich) finds herself in an untenable position when two of Blair's clients, Harry Carson (Robert Rendel)) and Richard Tremaine (Eugene Ormonde), both fall in love with her. Tremaine craftily makes it appear as if Helene is having an affair with Carson. When Blair divorces Helene, Tremaine, having remained above suspicion, feels emboldened enough to swoop down and claim the heroine for himself. Making matters even dicier is the fact that Tremaine's son Joseph (Edward Van Sloan ) is also crazy about Helene. This unpleasant situation culminates with Tremaine Junior being accidently killed by Tremaine Senior -- while Helene, the innocent cause of it all, is at last reunited with her husband.
