Synopsis by Mark Deming
Samuel Fuller directed this seagoing action-drama, which gained a certain infamy when a stunt man working on the project was killed while filming a scene with a shark. (For his part, Fuller attempted to disown the film after producers recut it without his consent.) Caine (Burt Reynolds) is an American outlaw who finds himself stuck in a Middle Eastern country after a deal to sell some guns goes bad. Desperate to get away, he takes a job as a deck hand on a ship crossing the Red Sea as part of a marine biologist's research project. However, Caine soon discovers that the story about the biologist is just a ruse -- the crew are actually hoping to cover a cache of stolen gold that's at the bottom of the sea. However, there's more than just water separating the crew and this ill-gotten fortune -- the waters are teeming with bloodthirsty sharks. Shark! also stars Barry Sullivan, Arthur Kennedy, and Silvia Pinal.
