A curiously overstuffed piece, Shadows And Fog is something of a dead end within Woody Allen's career, although a more interesting dead end than the dismissive reviews it received at the time would suggest. Packed with guest stars and borrowing elements from sources as diverse as Universal monster movies and Fellini, it's among the handsomest and the most adventurous of Allen's '90s films, but also among the least satisfying, suffering under the weight of so many influences and falling back on too many talky exchanges between Allen and Mia Farrow. That aside, there's no denying the appeal of watching Allen attempt so much at one time or the curiosity value of having such a circus of stars packed into film so modest in scale.
