Carrie's off to San Francisco for her book tour and, with any luck, also off to get laid. She decides to take the train out West for the event, and invites Samantha (Kim Cattrall) to accompany her. Fed up with the city and its men, Samantha happily accepts, and the two are soon riding the rails in search of lusty, wayward men. Unfortunately, all of them seem to be happily married, which doesn't bode well for promises of quality sex. While Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker) and Samantha are gone, Charlotte (Kristin Davis) gets up to some mischief on her own when her divorce attorney, Harry (Evan Handler), comes on to her. Despite the fact that Harry is bald and prone to copious sweat, Charlotte finds herself attracted to him, and the two are soon enjoying a quality fling that Charlotte -- going on the advice of her friend Anthony (Mario Cantone) -- decides to treat as just that. Meanwhile, out in San Francisco, Carrie makes the unpleasant discovery that the members of her audience are more interested in the next reader, who happens to be a dog. However, all is not lost when Big (Chris Noth) appears in the audience and asks some coy questions about his portrayal in Carrie's book. After the reading, Carrie tries to get Big into bed, but he begs off, telling her he doesn't want her to get hurt again. Carrie's just about to give up on ever getting laid again when, the next morning, Big reverts to his tried and true form and entices her to do some "research" for her next book.
