An auto mechanic is caught in the middle of a controversy with political and religious implications in this comedy-drama from India. Hashmat Ullah (Paresh Rawal) runs an auto shop in a largely Muslim community; he's a man known for the pride he takes in his work and the respect he shows to his neighbors. In the wake of a terrorist bombing, the police arrest a number of young Muslims; when they're held without trial despite flimsy evidence against them, local activists organize a protest, asking businessmen who deal with the government to shut their doors until the young men are freed. Hashmat believes in the cause and wants to do his part, but he's also been offered a very important assignment -- a lost urn of the ashes of Mahatma Gandhi has been discovered, and to carry the remains down to the River Ganges, officials want to restore a bus identical to the one used to carry his ashes in 1948. The aging engine has been brought to Hashmat, and he must decide if he should honor Gandhi and fix the motor or refuse the job in the spirit of the boycott. Road To Sangam received its North American debut at the 2010 Cinequest Film Festival.
