Designed to draw children into the world of reading, the programs are a blend of books, field trips, and activities related to the featured topic. In Reading Rainbow: Arthur's Eyes, Arthur is hesitant about using his new glasses, and encounters difficulties with his faulty vision. Books reviewed by young students include Through Grandpa's Eyes by Patricia MacLachlan and All the Colors of the Race by Arnold Adoff.
