Synopsis by Mark Deming

A handful of rebels stand up against tyranny in this historical drama from Romania. In 1944, Russian troops rolled into Romania, and the nation fell under the control of the Soviet Union. Many Romanians were unhappy living under Communism, and as the Soviet occupation forces became increasingly repressive, resistance forces began organizing in hopes of winning back control of their own land. Ion Gavrila Ogoranu (Constantin Dita) was the leader of an underground battalion dedicated to fighting the Soviet invaders. Setting up camp in the forests of Transylvania in 1946, Ogoranu and his men discover the life of a rebel is not easy, and as their vigil stretches into the mid-1950s, they skirmishes with the Soviet military become increasingly bloody as neither side shows any willingness to give an inch in the struggle to prevail. Written and directed by Constantin Popescu, Portretul luptatorului la tinerete (aka Portrait Of The Fighter As A Young Man) was an official selection at the 2010BFI London Film Festival.
