British filmmaker Ellis R. Duncan spins this Tamil yarn about two family in Kaveripoompattinam linked both through marriage and through the pearl selling business. Chokkalingam (R. Balasubramanyam) and his wife Vanji (Dhanalakshmi) have a daughter named Poonkothai (Madhuri Devi), while Mananayagan (Azhvar Kuppusami) and his wife Annam (Saraswathi) have a single son Ponmudi (Bharati). The two families have always promised their children for one another, until a land deal goes sour and a feud ensues. The two young lovers meet in secret until their families find out. Ponmudi is sent north on business, while Poonkothai runs away only to be captured by savages for a human sacrifice.
