Synopsis by Rose of Sharon Winter

This documentary, narrated by Laurence Luckinbill, chronicles the history of the 1991 Persian Gulf War. The conflict began when Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein sent troops into neighboring Kuwait to take control of oil fields there. The United States, concerned about its oil interests, responded to the aggression by declaring war on Iraq. The program examines the historical context for the war, the positions of the different parties in the conflict, and the strengths and weaknesses of their leaders. Although America and Kuwait prevailed in beating back the Iraqi troops, Saddam Hussein struck a terrible parting blow by setting fire to Kuwaiti oil fields. Archival film footage, photographs, and personal accounts are used to illustrate the course of the war.
