Synopsis by Mark Deming

A night of celebration turns into a subtle interrogation among three old friends in this drama from Chinese auteur Ning Ying. It's New Year's Eve in Beijing, and Niuniu (Hung Huang), the editor of a successful fashion magazine, has a big evening planned. She's laid out a feast of gourmet food and has invited over three of her best friends for an evening of mah jong, television soap operas, and girl talk. But Qinqin (Li Qinqin), Lala (Liu Sola), and Madame Ye (Ping Yanni) don't realize that Niuniu has more in mind than just a fun evening indoors. Niuniu has discovered that her husband is having an affair with one of her closest friends, and she's certain it's Qinqin, Lala, or Madame Ye, and over the course of the evening, she hopes to find out just who has betrayed her trust. Perpetual Motion (aka Wuqiong Dong) received its North American premier at the 2005 Toronto Film Festival.
