Synopsis by Nathan Southern
The legendary Teatro Alla Scala in Milan and Rai Trade joined forces to mount this elaborate 2001 production of Giuseppe Verdi's four-act 1887 opera Otello. Verdi originally adapted the material itself from Shakespeare's great tragedy of the titular ill-fated Moor. This particular version stars tenor Plácido Domingo as Otello, Leo Nucci as Iago and Barbara Frittoli as Desdemona; Graham Vick directs for the stage, and Ezio Frigerio designed the sets. The Orchestra and Chorus of the Teatro Alla Scala provide musical accompaniment under the baton of Riccardo Muti.
