Review by Brian Whitener

This 1976 video emerged from the loose video collective based out of the Los Angeles Women's Building. Two characters, a nun and a deviant, played by directors Nancy Angelo and Candace Compton, respectively, take turns approaching the camera while the other smashes plates in the background. As they address the camera, each undermines the audience's preconceived notions of their roles and in so doing undermines the construction of identity. To often, unfortunately, the piece's formalism serves as a stand-in for engagement and its analysis of the roles of women is neither deep or particularly original.
