As a project that began in 1959, The Concorde -- for elitists -- represented the next great leap forward in air travel. It took 18 years to build and launch, and Mach-2 flight would pose a series of difficult problems, including an outrageous amount of fuel consumption, shock waves, and increased friction; the endeavor thus drew ire from bureaucrats and politicians around the globe. But beginning in 1977, the Concorde jet -- the product of a unified, trans-national effort -- began an 18-year period of continuous trans-Atlantic service, until outrageous cost overruns and a tragic Parisian crash brought the endeavor to a screeching halt in 1993. In NOVA: Supersonic Dream, the popularly acclaimed and multi-award winning PBS series NOVA explores the legacy of this aircraft -- its beauty, its mythology, and its tragic history.
