A nun who goes up against the communist officials and the local priest is cast out in the snow to die in this somber anti-Stalinist drama. She risks all by calling for a forbidden midnight mass on Christmas Eve and forces the priest to give up the communal chalice. When a farm official tells the peasants they will benefit from working on collective farms, a farmer shoots his cows so he won't have to give them to the state.
