Synopsis by Nathan Southern
Ofka, the character at the center of director Michaela Pavlátová's feature Night Owls, sits in a most precarious spot - she's poised on the verge of adulthood, but unwilling to cross over and leave childhood and adolescence behind. While all of her friends, without exception, have moved along to successful futures and adult responsibilities, Ofka still works the night shift at her brother-in-law Eda's 24-hour convenience store and spends her free time rather pointlessly, drinking with friends and roaming through the streets of Prague with her oddball loser friend Ubr. As time rolls forward, however, Ofka begins to come face-to-face with her undying need to grow up. This represents director Pavlátová's second feature; she received a 1992 Oscar nomination for her animated short Reci, reci, reci. . ..
