Seen by some as a sick joke, others as a hauntingly visceral art film, and most as a revolting, unwatchable outrage, Jorg Buttgereit's Nekromantik did nothing if not make an impression. Unfortunately, this retread merely meanders in the wake of the original, ignoring the "bigger, faster, better" mentality that guides more mainstream sequels. The bland, affectless Monika M is a poor substitute for the pouty, wicked Beatrice Manowski, but the real problem lies with the script -- or lack thereof. Despite its visual flourishes and philosophical asides, Nekromantik was driven by an actual plot and punctuated by fresh and frequent obscenities. The sequel, however, is content merely to parrot the visual and thematic conceits of the original -- a little necrophilia here, a little animal cruelty there, and a bit of urban relationship comedy thrown in for good measure. Nothing ties these disparate strands together very clearly, and the whole thing moves at the glacial pace of an unedited home movie. The most entertaining scenes are actually the ones that establish leading man Mark Reeder's unglamorous porn-world profession; if he wanted to, Buttgereit could make a passable director of gore-free comedies. Luckily for splatter fans, though, he stuck to his guns and came up with the superior Schramm a few years later.
