Tom Selleck stars in this silly sports comedy that relies way too much on the suggestion that Japanese people are ridiculously different from Americans and therefore hilarious; Mr. Baseball is nothing more than an extremely formulaic story about an underdog who teams up with a ragtag bunch in a last-ditch effort to find success in his life. Only four years prior to directing this film, filmmaker Fred Schepisi helmed the critically acclaimed A Cry in the Dark, a fact that might prompt one to wish that a dingo would eat this movie.
