Synopsis by Jason Buchanan

The Road to Guantánamo co-director Mat Whitecross explores the politics of persecution by exposing the plight of the Karen people, who were uprooted from their lives following the 1962 military coup in Burma, and who are still searching for a place to call home. In 2009, approximately 150,000 Karen people were residing in Thai refugee camps near the Burmese border. By following two Karen families as they attempt to resettle in Sheffield, England, Whitecross contrasts life in the camps - where community was a crucial component of living - with life in the suburbs - where good fences make good neighbors. Though at first the culture shock sends them reeling, former farmer Jo-Kae and hard-working engineer Thaw Htoo do their best to land on their feet, and build new lives for their families.
