Synopsis by Alice Day

This volume of Montreux highlights features Dizzy Gillespie and his most important influence, Roy Eldridge. Eldridge had the speed and the high notes to which Gillespie aspired. Despite losing some of the media's attention to the younger trumpeters, Eldridge remained friends with Gillespie. Montreux Jazz Festival, Vol. 5 offers the two trumpet virtuosos a chance to strut their stuff, as they perform some classic songs from the jazz repertoire. Their performance includes "Here's that Rainy Day," "I Surrender Dear," and "Blues."
