In her fifth Hollywood film, Hungarian-born Lya De Putti stars as Rose, a cabaret dancer who marries a reformed gangster, Tim Regan (Kenneth Harlan), in order for him to adopt the orphaned son (Wendell Phillips Franklin) of a colleague. Jealous of Tim's love for little Sonny and tired of housework, Rose returns to her former lover Corbin (Henry Kolker). Distraught, Regan commits a bank robbery and is sent up the river. Realizing that Corbin is behind Regan's arrest, Rose suffers a nervous breakdown and her newborn child with Tim is taken away. A repentant Corbin arranges for Regan's pardon and Rose is reunited with her husband and Sonny. At first, Tim will have nothing to do with his errant wife, but Sonny reminds him of her sacrifice and they are reconciled. The beautiful De Putti, "Sally Bowles'" idol in Cabaret, had become an international star in E.A. Dupont's famous German film Variety (1925). Brought to Hollywood with some fanfare the following year, De Putti's American career proved disappointing. She died of pneumonia in a New York Hospital, November 27, 1931.
