Synopsis by Brian Whitener

The life of the historical Meera Bai, a medieval Indian poet, has received many treatments in books and films. An unconventional woman, this film gives her supernatural qualities, playing up the legendary events of her life. Meera's father makes a political marriage for her, but Meera believes she's destined to be the bride of Krishna. Her husband Bhojraj cannot force her to submit to the bonds of marriage, and Meera spends her time praying and writing poems to Krishna. Her husband, pressured by his strong-willed sister, sends his wife back to her father's house, but her father is away and she must return. Eventually, her husband takes Meera back much to the dismay of the sister. War calls Bhojraj away from the palace and leaves Meera at the mercy of the evil sister. After watching her Krishna idol be defaced and after being made a prisoner in the palace, Meera escapes and roams the countryside. Upon her return, Bhojraj, influenced by his sister, has Meera arrested and tried for treason and adultery. Unwilling to recant, Meera goes to her death and disappears into the temple of Krishna. The film features a soundtrack by Ravi Shankar.
