synopsis
Marriage (Die Ehe) was based on Van de Velde's best-selling novel The Perfect Marriage. Toning down the overt sexual aspects of the original novel (which caused the book to be banned in several communities in both Europe and the U.S.), the film isn't quite as racy, but was surprisingly uninhibited for its time. In "Kinsey Report" fashion, several different marriages are explored, each one marred either by a lack of communication or by too much carnal desire. The film concludes with a study of the union between Emperor Franz Josef and Maria Theresa, which is designated as "perfect" because husband and wife sought out the advice of a medical expert in sexual matters. Lil Dagover and Gustav Diesl headed the all-star cast.
