Two leaders on the battlefield square off with each other in this war drama from directors Harold D. Schuster and Robert Wise. Major Steve Lockhart (Pat O'Brien), who commands the 1st Marine Raider Battalion, is at odds with Captain Dan Craig (Robert Ryan), who helms the 1st Marine Parachute Battalion, after serving the Americans during fighting in Guadalcanal. After taking leave in Australia, Craig falls for flight officer Ellen Foster (Ruth Hussey), but is pulled away from his newfound love and forced to train prospective Marines by the combative, strong-willed Lockhart. The training scenes featured in this RKO picture were shot on location at Camp Elliott in San Diego.
