Maria was adapted from a novel by Swedish author Gustav Sandgren. The fresh-off-the-farm heroine comes to Big Bad Stockholm, hoping to find fame and fortune as a movie star. The film was tailored to the talents of Maj-Britt Nilsson, one of Sweden's favorite postwar screen personalities. Maria was one of the handful of Scandinavian films of the period that actually stood a chance at success outside its "target" audience.
