Synopsis by Hal Erickson

Maria was adapted from a novel by Swedish author Gustav Sandgren. The fresh-off-the-farm heroine comes to Big Bad Stockholm, hoping to find fame and fortune as a movie star. After a few initial setbacks, she succeeds beyond her wildest dreams. But will she be forced to sacrifice personal happiness in exchange for the adulation of millions? The film was tailored to the talents of Maj-Britt Nilsson, one of Sweden's favorite postwar screen personalities. Maria was one of the handful of Scandinavian films of the period that actually stood a chance at success outside its "target" audience.
