Synopsis by Mark Deming

A handful of women fight for their right to show their talents in the ring in this documentary from filmmaker Betty M. Park. In La Paz, Bolivia, professional wrestling is a popular entertainment, but it was a men-only affair until Carmen Rosa set out to break the glass ceiling of Bolivian wrestling. Rosa is a cholita, a female member of Bolivia's indigenous peoples, who dresses in her traditional attire and has won a devoted fan following for her bouts. However, not everyone is impressed with the notion of Bolivian women wrestling, and one person who wants to keep Rosa and her peers out of the game is Don Juan Mamani, the regional commissioner of pro wrestling. Despite Mamani's interference, Rosa and several other female wrestlers press on, promoting their own matches and even crossing into other countries as they follow their dreams. But Rosa also has to deal with problems at home, in particular a husband who doesn't think much of her new career. Mamachas Del Ring received its North American premiere at the 2010 Slamdance Film Festival.
