Synopsis by Mark Deming

A man expecting a quiet boat trip finds his life changed in remarkable ways in this offbeat drama. Vorsin is a guy who enjoys his life and has an adventurous love life, but he sometimes senses that there's a greater calling for him somewhere, and he imagines that the breezes call out to him with an important message. Vorsin's sister Olga is a scientist who studies fish, and she persuades him to join her and a handful of friends and colleagues for an expedition down the river. As Vorsin and his new friends make their way down the river, they encounter an area the residents like to call New Caledonia, and they soon find themselves drawn into a strange but inviting place that appears to be the answer to Vorsin's dreams. As the forces of nature take on a mystical cast, the travelers are drawn into a world where the rituals of the past are still felt in the present and they eagerly set out to find their place in this strange land. Featuring Velimir Rusakov, Nikita Tunin and Maria Velichkina, Niznaja Kaledonija (aka Lower Caledonia) was the first feature film from director Yulia Kolesnik.
