Mary Dorsey (June Elvidge) is a hotel maid with a drunken husband (Ed Roseman) and a baby to support. George Stevens (Donald Hall), a traveling salesman, checks into the hotel with his invalid wife and infant. While he's away on a brief trip, the wife and child die, and Mary uses the situation to switch babies, thus giving her own daughter a chance at a better life. The only problem is that another maid, Hannah Shay (Marion Barney), caught on to the situation and blackmails Mary. Eventually the stress kills her, but her daughter Helen (played as a grown up by Elvidge also) comes to live in wealth when Stevens enters into a partnership at his firm and makes a fortune. But Hannah, much older and even nastier, returns to blackmail the girl, just as she did to her mother. Helen winds up turning down a proposal from the young man she really loves and becomes engaged to someone who's well-off. But he breaks up with her when Hannah denounces her. Helen returns to her young man, and her foster father accepts her as if she were his own. This programmer was woefully predictable.
