Synopsis by Janiss Garza

A lot of homework went into this version of Louisa May Alcott's famous novel. The filmmakers (producer William Brady and director Harley Knowles) worked with the help of both the Alcott family and the Alcott Memorial Committee. In addition, the film was shot in and around the Alcott home to retain the New England feel of the book. While the film was a respectful rendition of the novel's tale of four sisters, and it captured the quaint spirit of America in the '60s (1860s, that is), critics of the day complained that the film moved along a bit too slowly, even for the bland entertainment it was.
