Synopsis by Nathan Southern
Claudio Monteverdi's once-scandalous opera L'Incoronazione di Poppea (1643) receives an elaborate production by the Glyndebourne Festival in this release. Performed and filmed in 2008, it dramatizes the tale of Roman emperor Nero (diva Alice Coote) as he works toward exalting his lover, Poppea (Danielle de Niese) to the empire's throne. The Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, under the baton of Emmanuelle Haim, lends musical accompaniment, while Robert Carsen directs for the stage.
