Synopsis by Clarke Fountain

For years after the 1968 Soviet re-occupation of Czechoslovakia, internationally well-known filmmakers such as Holly Martin were restricted to such works as this one, which chronicles the efforts of postwar communists to collectivize farming and institute land reforms. In the story, a farmer decides to have his daughter marry his foster-son, whom she grew up with, in order to keep the land each of them owns in one piece. The girl is unable to bring herself to sleep with her husband because he is virtually a brother to her, and the young man moves away for a while.
