Synopsis by Mark Deming

A man who makes a living putting the dead to rest tries to put his life in order in this gentle dark comedy from Iran. Mr. Esfandiar (Abbas Esfandiari) is the aging proprietor of a decaying cemetery in a small village in Central Iran. Esfandiar is hardly a friendly man under the best circumstances, and he's curt when not hostile to his employees. One night, Esfandiar is visited by the angel Azrael, who informs the elderly man that his death is imminent. Frightened by this news, Esfandiar takes it upon himself to be a better person and make amends with his co-workers and acquaintances. But some are puzzled by the "new" Esfandiar, while he learns turning over a new leaf isn't easy. Khab E Talkh (aka Bitter Dream) was the first feature film from writer and director Mohsen Amiryoussefi.
