synopsis
This drama marks the last film of popular Italian comic actor Massimo Troisi who died in his sleep a day after the filming was completed. He was only 41 years old. The story is a liberal adaptation of "Burning Patience," Chilean writer Antonio Skarmeta's novel set in a Chilean seacost village. Mario, a simple man filled with dreams he is unequipped to achieve, lives on a small island off Italy's coast. Exiled communist Chilean poet Pablo Neruda comes to Mario's island after the Italian government grants him sanctuary. Mario is appointed Neruda's personal postman. The film focuses on the relationship between the two disparate men as they gradually become friends.
