Filipino filmmaker Joel C. Lamangan directs the downbeat drama Hubog (Wretched Lives). Assunta de Rossi plays Vanessa, a poor girl trying to survive in a shanty town in the Philippines. She is interested in the cab driver Oliver (Wendell Ramos), but she starts up a relationship with the abusive bodyguard Uno (Jay Manalo). After her mother dies, she's expected to take on guardianship of her vulnerable and mentally disabled little sister Nikka (Alessandra de Rossi). Hubog was shown at the 2002 Toronto Film Festival as part of the Contemporary World Cinema program.
