Anthony Cole (Morgan Thorpe) disowns his daughter when she marries a poor music teacher. Many years later, he dies and his will offers up his estate to whoever manages to stay in his house for one full year. The grandson he has never met, Richard Steele (Bruce Gordon), rises to the challenge -- but he's not the only one. He doesn't realize that a distant relation, Lucy Atherton (May McAvoy), is also in the house. There are a lot of strange goings-on since the place is apparently haunted. And there are also certain scheming relatives are trying to get their hands on the inheritance. Cole finally reappears in the flesh to reveal that he had planned the affair and he was living in the house the whole time.
