Asa Whipple (Monroe Salisbury) is the blacksmith in a Kentucky mountain village. Although her father, Jethro Haws (Alfred Allen), wants her to marry young attorney Rufus Couch (Charles West), Nance (Alice Elliott) prefers the blacksmith, and they wed. Couch, however, carries a grudge. He works his way up to district attorney, and when a murder is committed in the village, he destroys the confession of the real killer and pins the crime on Whipple. Whipple is convicted and sent to prison. At the urging of her father and Couch, Nance divorces him. Though Whipple is eventually discovered to be innocent and is pardoned, he is perfectly willing to let Nance wed Couch -- as the attorney will be a better provider for their child. But Couch shoots him in the back, and while he is riding away, falls off his horse and is killed. Whipple recovers from his wound, and he and Nance are reunited. This film was based on a story, An Altar on Little Thunder, by Elmer Elliott Peake.
