Wailing sirens, screeching tires, prison breaks, and car chases are not exactly your typical Western trappings. And, to be honest, Hidden Gold is only a Western by a nip and a tuck and the presence of Tom Mix. The latter is by far too old for his role, but the Mix aura is still present and he manages to overcome what at first glance seems a clear case of miscasting. A typical early talkie, Hidden Gold suffers from noisy recording equipment and silent speed chases, but the acting is fine and Daniel B. Clark's camera typically fluid. Needless to say, both the action and the humor are meant solely for the very young at heart. A representative example is when Eddie Gribbon, after a long, bumpy ride on a buckboard, says "Oh, my poor fanny!" Raymond Hatton (concerned), "What happened to your poor sister Fanny?"
