Synopsis by Elizabeth Smith

Mahatma Gandhi, who died in 1948, taught the people of India the importance of using peaceful, non-violent means in their efforts to end British rule of their country. This program examines the early influences on Gandhi's life, including the teachings of Jainism so strictly adhered to by his mother, which promotes nonviolence and an emphasis on respecting the eternal aspects of life. The program also looks at why so many now view Gandhi as the "Father" of his country. Included footage reveals Gandhi's tendency to express himself in very clear yet passionate terms.
