Kate (Ella Hall) is a girl of the slums who has a sweetheart in "Big Bill" McMahon (Robert Z. Leonard, who also directed). When Marion Melton (Anna Lehr), a rich society girl, wants to test her theories on heredity, she winds up picking Kate for her experiment. She brings Kate to the Melton mansion, where the scruffy young girl is shown how to behave and dress in high society. She is such a good student that Marion's brother, Guy (Alan Forest) falls in love with her. They marry, but soon enough, Kate begins to feel neglected. When Guy tells her that it's part of being a society wife, she lets him have it and storms back to the slums. Big Bill tracks down Guy and explains that if he wants things to work out with his new wife, he must give as good as he gets. So he plays the tough guy, grabbing the resistant Kate and dragging her home. Using force apparently works, and the couple make up. Trade paper Motion Picture News had an interesting, if awkwardly written, comment about Robert Z. Leonard's performance: "Bob Leonard himself is her first lover, a most suitable role, being of the apparently ignoramus type, in which he is thoroughly at home." This statement must have been a bit humbling to the budding film director!
