Synopsis by Hal Erickson
Hard Times originated in 1974 an eight-part component of the daily Canadian general-interest series Take 30. Created by David Rabinovitch, the project emulated such published works as Barry Broadfoot's Ten Lost Years by offering an oral history of the Great Depression. Serving as host, narrator, and interviewer of eyewitnesses was the popular Canadian TV personality Ed Reid. A compelling amalgam of first-person recollections, newsreels, and still photos, Hard Times graduated to separate-series status when it was rebroadcast in prime time from August 4 to September 2, 1975.
