Synopsis by Mark Deming

A woman who has dedicated her life to the law finds her loyalties sharply divided in the animated sci-fi thriller from Japan. In the year 2100, Japan has opened a new port for international trade, and heightened security measures are needed to make sure waterway traffic remains safe and terrorist attacks are scuttled before they can happen. Takako, a former high-ranking police officer, forms a security firm, the Angel Arms Company, to help protect the Bayside City port. However, a band of criminals slip through hands of Angel Arms, and Takako is forced to cooperate with Hassan, a noted terrorist, in hopes she can glean enough information to stop him in the future. However, as Takako finds herself protecting Hassan, a group of underworld figures hatches a plot to assassinate Hassan -- led by Takako's estranged daughter, Alisa. Gundress: The Movie features artwork and character design by Masamune Shirow, who also helped create the animé classic Ghost in the Shell.
