A couple years removed from his outstanding performance in Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket, Matthew Modine starred in this film about the joy and pain of medical school. A comedy with many dramatic elements but lacking in personality, it benefits from Modine's smarmy, smart-alecky candor. While the actor's wiseacre character is the lifeblood of the film, he can't keep it from succumbing to typical '80s cheese. While mildly humorous, Gross Anatomy is easily dated and cannot stand the test of time, and director Thom Eberhardt does little more than tell the cameraman where to point the camera. One interesting aspect of the film is a cameo from veteran stage actor Zakes Mokae, who plays an anatomy instructor with interesting aplomb. It is never easy for an actor to follow up a role in a classic film, but perhaps Modine's agent is still scouting for talent somewhere near Siberia after this questionable career move.
